Q: What Does SCORE Mean?

A: The acronym Score was derived from "Service Corps Of Retired Executives". The fact that a growing number of members are still actively working enables our Counselors to remain fresh. Thus we are now known as "Counselors to America's Small Business".

Q: What Is SCORE?

A: SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed not only in The Volusia & Flagler area but nationwide.

Q: Who Funds SCORE?

A: Limited funding is provided by the Federal Government through the SBA. Chapter #87 relies on the generous support of the Counties, the Cities and local businesses. Our expenses are kept low by the fact that all the counselors donate their time free to the chapter.

Q: Who Are SCORE Mentors?

A: Retired and active business professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs who are committed to helping you grow a successful business.

Q: How Is The Mentor Assigned?

A: Based on the information you provide, we will assign a mentor whose experience and knowledge best fits your needs. It’s important to provide detailed information about your company and your needs in order to make the best fit.

Q: Can I Receive Counseling Before Opening A Business?

A: Certainly. In fact, it is recommended that you build a plan and review it with your mentor before you start your business.

Q: Does SCORE Provide Loans Or Investments?

A: No, but a SCORE mentor can help strengthen your business plan, increasing the likelihood of obtaining bank loans, and other financing.

Q: Is My Business Eligible?

A: Any American small business can obtain help from SCORE. Whether you are considering starting your own business, have a business that is experiencing problems, are ready to expand, or need some other type of advice, SCORE can help.

Q: What Is Email (Or Cyber) Counseling?

A: Email counseling is an email exchange between you, a soon-to-be entrepreneur, or small business owner, and a volunteer SCORE business mentor. Email counseling gives you the opportunity to send email questions about small business to a SCORE mentor anywhere in the country. Just get email counseling to get business advice. Send a question and your SCORE mentor will reply with his or her answer. Keep the dialog going as long as you have questions for your business mentor.
